| Potential writers for the magazine should understand, first and foremost, that our audience is made up of upscale, sophisticated and experienced Caribbean travelers: our research indicates that they visit the islands repeatedly. Therefore, our readers look to CT&L to guide them to the new and interesting places to visit, to explore the many facets of Caribbean culture and to highlight the fascinating people of the islands. The editors of CT&L are open to ideas from writers. Our only requirements are that the writing be superb, the subject be something unique and interesting, and the writer must know his/her subject. To understand what kind of stories we buy, read the last six issues of the magazine. We do NOT run generalized travelogues, guidebook-like island profiles, or stories about well-known, over-publicized or commonly visited places. We cover only destinations that touch the Caribbean Sea plus the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos and Bermuda. We do not cover Florida. Our readers demand behind-the-scenes stories, off-the-beaten-path destinations, ahead-of-the-curve knowledge about the Caribbean. Most of the major features in CT&L are assigned to staff or to writers with whose work we are familiar. New writers will have better success breaking in to one of our departments. The "Field Notes" section contains short newsy items about the Caribbean and its people; upcoming events; environmental news; and humorous items. "Travel" is the department of savings, bargains and hotel and transportation news. "Life" has several short pieces about people, arts, culture and music. Each issue contains a "Day Trip," a mini-feature highlighting an interesting excursion or adventure. "Caribbean Kitchen" is a department that focuses on food, cooking, restaurants and chefs in the region. Always keep in mind that the availability of good photographs to illustrate a story is essential.
DO NOT contact us by phone. Send an e-mail or snail-mail query with clips and be patient: Our editors are often traveling in the region and can take up to two months to respond. |
